Randall Anthony Smith
RANDALL ANTHONY SMITH balances and informs his creativity and scholarship from his performance career in acclaimed (inter)national dance companies: Armitage Gone! Dance (NYC), Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre (NYC) as well as his time working with Black US American Modern Dance Choreographer, Donald McKayle. He currently serves as one of McKayle’s primary répétiteurs, having performed for his Etude Ensemble as well as being his assistant for many years after. Smith earned his MFA in Dance from the University of California, Irvine. He maintains a practice of performing, restaging, and interpreting McKayle’s repertory, creating his own dance works, while teaching dance at colleges, universities, conservatories, companies and institutions, internationally, as well as nationally. Smith has performed with acclaimed ballerina and choreographer Jodie Gates and has had the privilege of dancing in her mentor, William Forsythe’s work. Other recent performances include works by Bulareyaung Pagarlava, Shen Wei, and zoe|juniper, as well as WOW, an experimental opera created by Joe Diebes, Christian Hawkey, and Adam Levin. Smith’s recent credits include a restaging of McKayle’s “The Fight” (from the musical Golden Boy, starring Sammy Davis, Jr.) for the American Dance Machine of the 21st Century, staging and performing the “Langston Hughes Suite” for Arganova Dance (Dallas, TX). Smith performed in Philip Glass’s opera "Witches of Venice," commissioned by Opera Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, New York. He also was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award at the 46th Annual Lauds and Laurels Awards Ceremony for the University of California, Irvine. As a guest artist, he has been spotted performing in Rochester, NY for the Somatics Dance Conference and the Minnesota Fringe Festival in Minneapolis. Randall Anthony Smith earned his Pilates Method Certification, under the direction of Diane Diefenderfer, Master Pilates instructor for the Pilates Method and Ron Fletcher Work. He also holds certifications in CrossFit (L1) and USA Olympic Weightlifting (L1).
